Professor John G. Byrne
Trinity College Dublin, in partnership with alumni and friends, wishes to honour Professor John G. Byrne’s extraordinary contribution to the College and to computer science in Ireland, in this 50th anniversary year of his founding of the Department of Computer Science. The School of Computer Science and Statistics is seeking support from alumni and friends to create the John G. Byrne Digital Learning Centre in the E3 Learning Foundry and to endow the John G. Byrne Scholarships.
John G. Byrne Digital Learning Centre
The E3 Institute is a landmark initiative by Trinity to develop sustainable solutions for a liveable planet. The first phase of the E3 Institute is the E3 Learning Foundry, a state-of-the-art 6,000m² facility that will bring students of Engineering, Computer Science and Natural Sciences together under one roof in flexible learning and ideation spaces designed for collaborative project work. The E3 Learning Foundry will open to students in 2022.
The second phase of the E3 Institute will be the E3 Research Institute (E3RI) at the heart of the Grand Canal Innovation District, for which planning approval will be sought in 2020.
The vision for E3 resonates strongly with the foresight and values embodied by Professor John G. Byrne and recognising his contribution in the E3 Learning Foundry will be a fitting tribute. The John G. Byrne Digital Learning Centre will be the largest single space in the building, advancing knowledge, learning and impactful dialogue on the challenges of a new digital era.
The John G. Byrne Digital Learning Centre will also display and curate part of Professor Byrne’s collection of papers and devices, which chart the development of computation and the computing industry in Ireland.
John G. Byrne Scholarships
Throughout his long career in Trinity, Professor John G. Byrne was passionate about nurturing talent and supporting students. The creation of John G. Byrne Scholarships salutes this passion.
Support from our alumni and friends will be invested in the College endowment to create a permanent John G. Byrne Scholarship Fund. This will provide full and part-funded scholarships to undergraduate students from under-represented groups who have come to Trinity to study Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
Join in the Tribute to Professor John G. Byrne
Trinity College Dublin is seeking philanthropic funding of €1,000,000 to name the John G. Byrne Digital Learning Centre in the E3 Learning Foundry and to create the John G. Byrne Scholarship Fund in his honour. Supporters will be recognised for their contribution through an appropriate naming opportunity.
